Salty Dog Sportfishing Hawai'i Premiere

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii - Salty Dog Sportfishing Hawai'i makes its television debut nationally, regionally and statewide in April and May. The series will make its national debut on Friday, April 29 on Versus, now part of the NBC Sports Group. It premiered on CSS Sports (Cable Sports Southeast) on Saturday, April 2. On Wednesday, May 4, OC16 welcomes the series to their statewide lineup.

Salty Dog Sportfishing Hawai'i is a 30-minute, 13-episode television series that follows the Lattof family of Kona, Hawai'i and Orange Beach, Alabama in their pursuit of large Pacific blue marlin aboard the Salty Dog in the beautiful waters off the Island of Hawai'i.

"This show is about Kona, for Kona, by Kona," says series producer/director Mason Farish. "There's never before been, that I can think of, a national series where every episode was shot exclusively on the Island of Hawai'i or in Kona. Everything is done here - from shooting to editing to closed captioning. I was thrilled and honored when Capt. Mitch Lattof came to us with his idea and asked if we could help make it a reality. He wanted this show to be unlike anything else on TV, and I think we've accomplished that."

Each episode of Salty Dog Sportfishing Hawai'i combines exhilarating fishing action with history of the sport, marlin science, proven angling techniques, cutting-edge graphics, Hawaiian culture, the spirit of aloha and ohana, plus the beauty of Hawai'i. Underwater, aerial, chase boat, and multiple on-boat HD cameras capture the fishing action from all angles.

Marlin Science segments, hosted by Andrew West, Ph.D., cover topics such as the anatomy, migration, life cycle, behavior and conservation of the Pacific blue marlin. Grander Moment segments share the captivating stories of legendary Kona captains who have caught granders (marlin weighing 1000 lbs or more) in Hawaiian waters.

Fishing is truly in the blood of the Lattof family, who recently made Kona their second home. Executive Producer Capt. Mitch Lattof grew up on the docks of Trent Marina, which was built by his grandparents in Orange Beach, AL in the late 50s. He was researching big game fishing by the age of 9 years old (when he caught his first blue marlin) and knew then that he needed to get to Kona to learn from the best. "The top guys in the world are here", says Capt. Mitch. "No matter where else I looked, Australia, Madeira, or Brazil, it always seemed like the top fishermen were from Kona and just doing a stint there. The only reason we ever catch a fish is because I've had the pleasure of fishing with and learning from these amazing men."

Capt. Mitch's sister Ashton, the featured angler of the series, tagged right along after her big brother and feels the same way about Kona. "The fishing is just so much better here than anywhere else in the world." In 2008, Ashton caught her largest fish to date, a 748 lb. Pacific blue marlin on the Salty Dog here in Kona with Capt. Mitch.

Ashton and Mitch's parents, Sissy and Mitch, Jr. (aka "Big Daddy"), feel blessed to have been able to raise their kids in the small fishing community of Orange Beach, Alabama, where faith, family and friends were such an integral part of life. Now, living part-time in Kona, they see these same values treasured in the Hawaiian culture.

Mason Farish also grew up in Alabama and has made Kona home for over 17 years. "As a kid, I was fascinated by TV and movies, especially westerns," says Farish. "Little did I know then that one day I'd have the privilege of producing a TV series featuring the favorite getaway and pastime of my idols - Richard Boone (Paladin from "Have Gun - Will Travel), Lee Marvin and John Wayne - who spent many days fishing and relaxing in Kona in the 50's and 60's."

Regina Farish, producer and marketing coordinator for the series, adds, "Bringing this series to life has been hard work, long hours and times of frustration and joy. Season Two of Salty Dog Sportfishing Hawai'i will begin filming in May. Seasons 1 and 2 will be seen on Versus and OC16 through spring of 2012.

Salty Dog Sportfishing Hawaii

Enters Post-Production Phase

Farish Media has recently completed principal photography for its new television series Salty Dog Sportfishing Hawaii. The fishing segments for the series were filmed this past summer on the Salty Dog in waters off the Kona Coast of Hawaii. In September and October,filming was completed for two special segments that will be featured in each episode Grander Moment and Marlin Science with Dr. Andrew West, PhD. Grander Moment is stories of Pacific Blue Marlin 1000 pounds and bigger which have been caught in Kona waters, as told by the captains and crew. Marlin Science will reveal scientific research and facts about marlin ranging from the basics of what a marlin is to their anatomy and physiology. Wheaties Fuel Utilizes Farish Media Facilities During Ironman World Triathlon

Ironman is always a busy time in Kona, especially for local production houses. This year, Farish Media, Inc teamed with MSA television productions out of Charlotte, NC to help shoot and edit a promotional video for Wheaties Fuel Wheaties newest nutritional product for the active individual. Cameraman Mike Peele and audio technician Don Penner worked with producers from Wheaties to capture nutrition tips from Ironman participants. Mike also shot b-roll of the Ironman World Championship race and worked as editor to incorporate the Ironman footage into the Wheaties Fuel Prepare to Win promo. To view the promo click here.

The French Connection

National Television of France is completing production of Earth From Above, a documentary featuring planet Earth's most amazing scenery including the Big Island of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano. The producers selected clips from Farish Media''s aerial stock footage library to compliment the project. The Paris-based production house Societe Europenne de Production has spent the last 2 months in post-production.

Warrior Golf Clubs to Release National Campaign

Warrior Golf Clubs, based in Orange County California, has contracted Farish Media to produce their upcoming advertising campaign for their new line of clubs, including irons and woods. Regina and Mason Farish will write and produce the two 60-second commercials in the campaign. Farish Media crews will shoot in December and the campaign will be released in January for national airplay.

A good media library consisting of video stock footage and still photos is a must-have for the marketing department of any resort. Stock footage is used in production, marketing, publicity, and advertising, among other applications. A perfect Hawaiian evening complete with music and moonlight was the setting for Uncorked a wine and food event hosted by The Shops at Mauna Lani on October 16, 2010. Farish Media was on-hand to capture HD footage of this "first of its kind" event at Mauna Lani. Uncorked featured wines and beers from Johnson Brothers, Paradise Beverages and others,as well food tastings from Ruth's Chris Steak House, Monstera, Foodland Farms,and Tommy Bahama Restaurant and Bar. Farish Media Producing New TV Series

Farish Media, in association with Salty Dog Productions, is currently in production of a new 13-episode TV series entitled The Salty Dog Sportfishing Chronicles. This new series will feature the crew of the Salty Dog - Captain Mitch Lattof, first mate Charlie Bowman and angler Ashton Lattof - in their quest for a grander (1,000+ pound pacific blue marlin) in the beautiful waters off Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

"I don't remember catching my first fish, or even my first thousand," says Mitch Lattof, "but I do remember the first time I laid eyes on a blue marlin, and how breathtaking it was to catch one at only nine years old."

The Salty Dog Sportfishing Chronicles will offer a glimpse into the life of fishing in Kona. Viewers will learn about the latest and most advanced techniques for pursuing blue marlin. You'll experience the excitement, boredom, humor, conflict, disappointment and exhilaration that all go along with fishing for the big blues. You'll also learn more about Hawaii and the Kona fishing community, where Mitch knows he must earn stripes among what is considered the "elite of the elite" in the world of big game fishing.

The production team for the series is lead by director Mason Farish and producer Regina Farish of Farish Media, Inc. Mike Peele will serve as associate producer. Mitch Lattof is writer and executive producer. The series will be shot exclusively in HD with two cameras mounted full-time on the Salty Dog, three top-side cameramen, one underwater cameraman, and one chase boat cameraman. It will be edited in Final Cut Pro HD. Shooting has begun and will wrap in August 2010.

International Hula Festival Returns to Big Island

Farish Media recentlydocumented one of worlds largest hula festivals at Waikoloa Beach Resort, November 5-9, 2008. The third annual The Moku O Keawe International Festivalfeatured hundreds of performers and students from Hawaii, Japan and aroundthe world. The event is an immersivecelebration of hula and offers diverse opportunities to experience Hawaiis best-loved artform - in competition, workshops and performances. The master workshops offer amicro-education in Hawaiian culture, hula and its related arts and were taughtthis year by such respected artisans as Kealii Reichel, Nalani Kanakaole, andKeala Ching, among many others. Earth, Wind and Fire Rocks Waikoloa

"Shining Star", "That's The Way Of The World", "Boogie Wonderland" - hits from one of the greatest musical acts of all time. Recently, Farish Media had the rare opportunity to work with them.

Super group Earth, Wind and Fire performed at Waikoloa Beach Resort during the Grand Opening weekend of Queens MarketPlace in September. Farish Media utilized a three-camera HD shoot to document portions of the concert for the promoter. We even had a cameraman shooting in HD from the helicopter that dropped 15,000 plumerias over the crowd prior to the concert. Produced segments were also distributed to network affiliates in Honolulu and websites.

SuperTechno Crane Brings New Perspective to Production

We recently traveled to Oahu for a 4-day HD production at the Beach Villas at Ko Olina Resort. While there we had the opportunity to work with a fabulous new production tool the SuperTechno 30 ft camera crane. I must admit there was a little initial trepidation as we rigged our baby (the Panasonic Varicam HD cinema camera) to this monstrosity of a crane and watched it soar over 30 feet into the air, but WOW, what a beautiful new perspective it brought to our shots. We used the crane for not only high overhead shots, but also for low angles, reveals and other unique shots not normally available with tripod and dolly. ESPN Chooses Farish Media for Studio Work

When ESPN needed a local studio to engineer audio for BSC Bowl Week, they chose Farish Media. Legendary ESPN / ABC sportscaster Brent Musburger cut his voiceovers for the promo ads for Capital One Bowl Week and the Rose Bowl Game presented by Citi in our studios recently. Brent and the Farish crew had lots to discuss as were all big college football fans. Brent particularly impressed us by showing up wearing a Sugar Bowl T-Shirt for the Hawaii

CSNY: Freedom of Speech Tour 2006 is the subject of rocker Neil Youngs' latest documentary in his ongoing Living With War project. When looking for a local production house to provide digital editing facilities and creative expertise, Neil chose Farish Media, Inc. Neil and producer Larry Johnson spent over 60 hours over a seven week period at Farish Medias HD post-production facilities in Kona. They worked with editor Mike Peele to cut together footage taken from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's 2006 Freedom of Speech Tour for the documentary. On June 29, 2007 Farish Media produced the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerces Officers Installation Banquet at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. We are still getting comments on how professional the luncheon was how very like the Academy Awards it was it was the hit of the year said Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Vivian Landrum. Combining a 10 x 14 foot big screen for all video elements with live cameras, a pre-produced video that highlighted the Chambers accomplishments of the past year, introductory videos of all Pualu Award winners and Ulumau graduates, looping animated logos, professional lighting and audio, and customized walk-up music for all participants helped create the Academy Awards feel.

Farish Media Captures Stunning HD Aerials of the Big Island

For the past two years, Farish Media, has grabbed the chance to lease NBCs helicopter package the day after the networks award-winning Ironman Triathlon Championship production for national television. Our goal? Shoot the finest HD aerials around Hawaiis Big Island in a half-day. Using the Wescam nose-mount system and Sonys finest HD camera with 42:1 telescopic lens, our flight around the Big Island was just as exciting as a kids first trip to Disneyland.

Mason Farish directed the production and Mike Peele served as assistant director. FM was fortunate to acquire one of Hawaiis best pilots, Kalani Ching of Sunshine Helicopters (he also pulled Ironman pilot duties). On camera was one of Canadas best aerial camera operators, Chris Chanda, a Toronto native, whose gifted hands and eyes added magic to each and every shot.

Needless to say, Hawaii is a strikingly beautiful model and over four hours of stunning footage was produced in HD cinematic quality. Coastlines, waterfalls, forests, valleys and one red-hot fiery volcano later, we had accumulated the footage we needed for several projects, including the Hawaii Island Visitors Bureau DVD. Shot on our Panasonic Varicam HD camera, this cinematic celebration of the best of the Big Island is hosted by Malika Dudley, Miss Hawaii 2005. Actor Jason Scott Lee opens the video along with a Hawaiian blessing by Danny Akaka. 15-minutes in length, the production is the culmination of a six-month long labor of love capturing amazing island beauty and culture in stunning HD clarity. Translated into Japanese, Chinese, and Korean, the DVD is being distributed around the world to those inquiring about the Island of Hawaii and to business travel industry professionals. Farish Media Independent Film Debut

Farish Media recently completed their first independent short film - On My Way to Pele written and directed by Mason Farish. The film is about a man who dreams of soaring like a bird above the beautiful island of Hawaii and in the process discovers Pele. It is a story of dreams, inspiration, creation, the magic of flight, the beauty of the Big Island and the power of Pele Hawaiis volcano goddess. The film stars Bryan Oakley as the Dreamer. On My Way to Pele made its world premiere at the Big Island Film Festival in Waikoloa in May 2007. It also made its television premiere on OC16s Hawaiis Reel Storeis in September. The film has been submitted to several other film festivals and competitions / venues that support and encourage independent production. DVDs are available upon request.
